Abstract

The crystal structure of this synthetic nosean was determined from XRD powder data using the Rietveld method. A MAS NMR investigation of (super 29) Si showed total ordering of the Si(OAl) (sub 4) framework atoms; in contrast to the sodalite structure, the cage-filling clusters [Na (sub 4) CO (sub 3) ] (super 2+) and [Na (sub 4) ] (super 4+) are fully ordered. Space group P23 is confirmed along with ordering of framework atoms. The carbonate anion, with the C atom located at the central position, exhibits 12-fold orientational disorder within the beta -cage; the Na cations are distributed over two positions. From their coordinates, it is possible to derive the location of the cations inside the anion-free cages very close to the six-membered rings of the aluminosilicate framework. The configuration of ions inside both types of cage should not be considered as static, but rather on the basis of highly dynamic behaviour leading to an optimal charge distribution between anion-containing cages and anion-free cages.
