Abstract

Time-of-flight coherent inelastic neutron scattering measurements were made at 14 and 30 K on a powdered sample of pyrope, (Mg (sub 0.92) Fe (sub 0.05) Ca (sub 0.03) )Al (sub 2) Si (sub 3) O (sub 12) , from the Dora Maira massif, western Italian Alps. An interatomic potential function has been modelled by simultaneous fitting to the structural, elastic and vibrational properties of the mineral, and the potential developed has been used to interpret the experimental inelastic neutron scattering patterns.
