Abstract

Hydrothermal experiments using mixtures of natural kaolinite, alumina gel and calcium oxide or carbonate, at relative proportions which correspond with a 2:1 margarite:beidellite ratio, yielded a 34 Aa regularly interstratified 2:1 margarite-beidellite, at 450-500 degrees C and residence time greater than 2 weeks. Shorter experiments in the same T range yielded at 25 Aa regularly interstratified margarite:beidellite. The synthesis of the 34 Aa phase, which has not been reported in nature, was confirmed by XRD, TEM and chemical analysis.
