Abstract

Single-crystal XRD and EPMA results are presented for clinopyroxenes from calc-alkaline volcanic rocks on Alicudi. The crystal chemical data indicate considerable differencees between the clinopyroxenes of early eruptive stages and those from the latest volcanic activity: the early clinopyroxenes are characterized by smaller cell volumes and a more closely packed structure than the later ones, suggesting a higher P of crystallization for the former. The clinopyroxenes follow the overall trend of rock composition: basaltic and andesitic-basaltic for the earliest products, becoming slightly more acidic at the end of volcanic activity. This is explained in terms of the increasing role of fractional crystallization with respect to mixing with primary mafic melts; the Alicudi clinopyroxenes also indicate decreasing P of crystallization with time, lending support to the hypothesis of polybaric evolution of the Alicudi magmas.
