Abstract
The continuous Fe-Mg exchange reaction 1/2 Fe-cordierite + 1/3 pyrope = 1/2 Mg-cordierite + 1/3 almandine between garnet and cordierite has been recalibrated as a thermometer. The thermodynamic parameters for this reaction were derived from experimentally determined Fe-Mg fractionation data in the P-T range 4-12 kbar, 650-1000 degrees C in the FeO-MgO-Al (sub 2) O (sub 3) -SiO (sub 2) -H (sub 2) O system, and the Margules parameters for Fe-Mg binary symmetric mixing in cordierite were also derived. Application of the resultant formulae to experimental and natural data are considered to provide better T estimates than previous calibrations for coexisting garnet-cordierite pairs.
