Abstract

Individual grains of kirschsteinite from the Vulcano Laziale iron meteorite are chemically homogeneous, with compositions near Ca (sub 1.00) Fe (sub 0.61) Mn (sub 0.17) Mg (sub 0.22) Cr (sub 0.002) SiO (sub 4) . The crystal structure of two different crystals (Fa (sub 39) Fo (sub 11) La (sub 50) and Fa (sub 35) Fo (sub 14) La (sub 51) ) were refined in space group Pbnm (a 4.877, 4.875; b 11.166, 11.164; c 6.448, 6.447 Aa), yielding similar results. In particular, the geometry of the M2 and T coordination polyhedra does not change with respect to other Ca-bearing olivines, whereas M1 is sensitive to the site populations.
