Abstract

EPMA and XRD techniques were used to study ancient beads from these two areas. The beads from graves in Oman can be divided into those made from serpentinite, chloritite and amphibolite from the Samail ophiolite and those of metal, glass, Egyptian Blue and synthetic enstatite; garnet beads are interpreted as imports from the Indian subcontinent. Opaque red glass beads from Sri Lanka are commonly K-rich and coloured by tiny cuprite droplets which recrystallized from the melt. A cogged wheel bead from Oman was carved from steatite and hardened by conversion of the steatite to synthetic enstatite by firing at approximately 1000 degrees C.
