Classification of borate minerals
European Journal of Mineralogy (February 1997) 9 (1): 225-232

Index Terms/Descriptors

A classification scheme based on the earlier schemes of Christ [A.M. 45-334], Tennyson (1963), Heller (1970) and Christ & Clark (1977) has been applied to all known borate minerals. The primary divisions are based on the number of borate atoms in the borate anions (monoborates, diborates, tetraborates, etc.), with subdivisions related to the degree of polymerization of the individual borate units (neso-tetraborates, ino-tetraborates, phyllo-tetraborates, tecto-tetraborates). Additional subdivisions are based on the detailed configurations of the borate anions.
