Abstract

The Palaeoproterozoic Pinal schist comprises mainly greenschist-facies turbiditic metasediments with associated volcanic rocks. The deformation history of the schist includes folation and the development of elongation lineation within sedimentary protoliths during early basin contraction, followed by warping of the metamorphosed sediments into upright regional-scale horizontal folds with a wavelength of 10 km. Continued contraction caused the development of shear zones approximately anticlinal axial surfaces, and the intrusion of syn-kinematic granitic rocks into anticlinal cores. It is suggested that shear zone distribution reflects control by a pre-existing rift margin.
