The unusually low Delta (super 18) O values of -10.3 to -6.80/00 are found in mineral separates from an eclogite pod (containing bands of quartz schist) in the Su-Lu terrain, E China. Oxygen isotope equilibrium has been approached among the minerals within both eclogite and quartz schist; this yields the concordant isotope T of 655-765 degrees C and also indicates that these rocks have exchange oxygen isotopes with a very (super 18) O-depleted fluid. A plausible interpretation for the anomalously low Delta (super 18) O values of the eclogite pod is that it equilibrated isotopically with ancient meteoric water prior to eclogite-facies metamorphism and has preserved the pre-metamorphic isotopic signature. The hydrothermally altered basaltic rocks kept this isotopic signature through all stages of progressive ultra-high-P metamorphism as well as subsequent exhumation and cooling. This provides an insight into limited crust-mantle interactions under ultra-high-P metamorphic conditions in the suture zone of a continent-continent collision.
