Abstract

Moessbauer spectra for 30 Cr-spinels separated from sub-oceanic, upper-mantle tectonic peridotites from the Ibra, Hatta and Dibba areas, Semail massif, were measured in an attempt to determine their Fe (super 3+) contents; the determined Fe (super 3+) fractions were then used to calculate fO (sub 2) . The average Delta fO (sub 2) (relative to FMQ) is -1.11 + or - 0.4 log units, in agreement with that reported for abyssal peridotites (-0.9 + or - 0.7 log units) and the orogenic Ronda massif (-1.1 + or - 0.7), and in contrast to the oxidized continental xenolith (+0.24 + or - 0.5 relative to FMQ).
