Abstract
Diamond head is a tuff cone thrown up explosively from beneath the level of the sea, and is to be compared with the Monte Nuovo, near Naples. It was ejected through fossiliferous limestones of Tertiary age, probably Pliocene. Hitchcock summarizes all previous views of the origin of Diamond head, including those of Dana (1849), Brigham (1868), Dutton (1884), Dall (1900), Bishop (1901), Branner (1903), Cross (1904), Dall (1904), including views expressed in a letter from Dall to Hitchcock.
