Abstract

Fission-track ages on detrital zircons from Eocene-covered bauxites in the area W of Budapest appear to reflect the cooling age of the source rock(s). The majority of the detrital zircon crystals are euhedral and give additional information on the petrographic character of the host rocks. It is concluded that pyroclastic andesitic rocks of a pre-middle Eocene volcanism contributed to the bauxite deposited on the exposed karstified carbonate terrain. A euhedral zircon population of 210-260 m.y. was also identified in some bauxites, their source probably being Middle Triassic trachyandesite tuffs. Older, well-rounded zircons may have been derived from the Hercynian parametamorphic rocks.
