Abstract

Zinc ferrite has the cubic spinel structure with an approximately normal cation distribution. It was synthesized from the oxides at 300 degrees C and also by using a sodium tungstate flux with excess of ZnO. The cell parameter a decreases from 8.4419 Angstrom for samples annealed at 500 degrees C to 8.4400 Angstrom for 950 degrees C, but there is no significant difference between methods of synthesis. The change of a with time during isothermal annealing at 500 degrees C shows that a steady value is reached in approx 24 hr. Mossbauer spectra show only a single doublet with hyperfine characters characteristic of octahedral Fe (super 3+) ; the tetrahedral Fe (super 3+) deduced from XRD refinements could not be resolved.
