Abstract

Aluminous metasediments of Crete and Greece contain assemblages with Fe-Mg-carpholite, sudoite, chloritoid, pyrophyllite, chlorite, garnet, white mica and quartz. Variations of parageneses and mineral reactions in response to varying P, T and a (sub H) (sub s) (sub O) have been studied in detail. The P-T estimates are: eastern Crete approx 300 degrees C, 8 kbar; central Crete approx 350 degrees C, 9 kbar; western Crete and the Peloponnese approx 450 degrees C, 17 kbar. In E Crete, in rocks with low Mg/Fe (super 2+) , chlorite + pyrophyllite occurs but in central Crete this assemblage is no longer stable and chloritoid appears, occasionally associated with carpholite, the latter mineral only appearing in the case of relatively high a (sub H) (sub 2) (sub O) (1.0-0.7). In W Crete the carpholites are richer in Mg. It is suggested that for such metapelite assemblages, the AFM- lithologies and calculated equilibrium curves offer possibilities for evaluating P, T and a (sub H) (sub 2) (sub O) of very low to low- grade high-P metamorphism.
