Abstract
The Fe-Mg distribution over the M1 and M2 octahedral sites in five chemically analysed orthopyroxenes (FeO 4.58-30.54%) has been determined by XRD and Mossbauer spectroscopy. The results using the two methods agree for the two samples with intermediate composition but diverge for the two Fe-poor and one Al-rich sample (from a granulite); XRD indicates a more ordered Fe-Mg distribution. A formula for correcting Mossbauer data to take account of the thickness effect is proposed.
