Abstract

The phengite XRD peak at d approx 1.5 Angstrom, formerly often labelled 060, is a convolution of 331 (super -) and 060, whose intensities are in the ratio of approx 2:1. Since both diffracting planes are practically perpendicular (001), no preferred orientation can separate one diffraction peak from the other. By converting d (sub 331,060) to b a systematic error is introduced. The correlation between d (sub 331,060) and the (Fe + Mg) content of musccovites remain valid as does the use of d (sub 331,060) for geobarometry within a given petrological and bulk- compositional context.
