Abstract

A critical review of the literature revealed some problems concerning the solubility measurements of these oxides and oxyhydroxides in alkaline solution. New measurements for gibbsite and bayerite in an alkaline environment have led to the conclusion that gibbsite is the trihydrate stable at 25 degrees C. Results for boehmite and diaspore give good agreement between calorimetric values for entropy and solubility measurements. It is considered that the order of increasing stability for the aluminium hydroxides at 25 degrees C is diaspore > boehmite approx gibbsite > bayerite. The Gibbs free energy of formation of Al(OH) (super -) (sub 4) at 298.15 K is -1305.42 kJ/mol.
