Abstract

A synthetic amphibole with composition near Na (sub 3) Mg (sub 5) [Si (sub 8) O (sub 21) (OH)](OH) (sub 2) has been shown by Rietveld refinement of XRD powder data to possess trinclinic symmetry. Electron diffraction indicates a superstructure with a three-fold b value. The structure transforms reversibly through a complex 60 degrees C transition zone to the common C2/m symmetry above approx 160 degrees C. The authors suggest that natural amphiboles with A sites filled with Na (super +) should be examined closely for evidence of triclinic symmetry.
