Compositional zoning in hydrothermal aegirine from fenites in the Proterozoic Gardar Province, South Greenland

Abstract

Compositionally zoned Ti-bearing augite occurs in fenites and hydro- thermal veins and vugs associated with nepheline syenites in the Narssaq area. The pyroxene compositions can be considered as a solid solution between aegirine (NaFeSi (sub 2) O (sub 6) ) and 1- 26 mole% of NaFe (sub 0.5) Ti (sub 0.5) Si (sub 2) O (sub 6) . Discontinuous zoning indicates several episodes of crystal growth in this aegirine, suggesting continuous changes in the physicochemical conditions of the material supplied to the growing crystal faces. Textural relationships and the presence of sector zoning indicate rapid non-equilibrium crystalliz- ation leading to the metastable incorporation of Ti and Al into the aegirine. The sector zoning of Ti and Al is controlled by substitution in the M1 position and not by the tetrahedral-octahedral site coupled substitution common in augite.
