Application of mineralogical techniques to gemmology
Application of mineralogical techniques to gemmology (in Annual congress of the Societa Italiana di Mineralogia e Petrologia; Applied mineralogy; problems, advances and future, E. Althaus (editor), C. Chopin (editor), F. P. Sassi (editor) and C. Willaime (editor))

The application of sophisticated instrumentation developed in other disciplines and encouragement from commercial gem dealers where thorough certification of the nature of precious stones in jewellery is required have led to remarkable advances in scientific gemmology. Raman and IR spectroscopy, microprobe analysis, XRD, etc., are becoming routine and considerable progress in gem synthesis has been achieved.
