Abstract

The most important economic occurrences of REE are the magmatic to hydrothermal bastnasite deposits of Mountain Pass, California, and Bayan Obo, China, as well as the monazite-bearing crustal sands of Australia, Brazil and India. China has by far the most important reserves. The industrial applications of both mixed and individual REE are reviewed. An increased demand is apparent for individual REE of high purity and for mixtures of specific REE.
