Accurate control of f (sub H2) in cold-seal pressure vessels with the Shaw membrane technique

Abstract

An experimental setup is described to use the Shaw membrane technique in cold-seal pressure vessels, allowing constant partial P of hydrogen, and hence fH (sub 2) and fO (sub 2) , to be maintained in experimental charges for up to several weeks; fH (sub 2) prevailing in gas pressurized vessels can be accurately determined. Osmotic equilibrium can be attained by diffusion of H (sub 2) from the membrane towards the pressure vessel (without adding H (sub 2) to the P medium before heating up); PH (sub 2) and thus fH (sub 2) can be fixed at any desired value with a minimum precision of + or - 1 bar. Osmotic equilibrium is reached within < 2 or < 20 hr, with membranes made of Ag (sub 23) Pd (sub 77) or Ag (sub 70) Pd (sub 30) , respectively (at 770 degrees C, 1 kbar P (sub tot) and PH (sub 2) up to 50 bar). This technique has been used to calibrate the fO (sub 2) imposed by the Co-CoO solid buffer assemblage at 735 and 780 degrees C at 1 kbar.
