Abstract

Mereiterite is from the Hilarion adit, Laurion, Attica; it occurs as subhedral crystals included in gypsum and is also associated with limonite and smithsonite found in a large pocket in marble. The transparent, pale yellow crystals have a vitreous lustre; H. 21/2; D 2.36 g/cm (super 3) ; alpha 1.497, beta 1.501, Gamma 1.509, 2V<F128MV>a<F255D> [?2V<F128MV>g<F255D>] 73 degrees ; alpha [010], Gamma : c approximately 20 degrees . Chemical analysis by ICP, XRF and TG indicated a formula of K (sub 1.94) Fe (sub 1.07) S (sub 1.99) O (sub 8.01<P6M><P255>3.99H) (sub 2) O, ideally K (sub 2) Fe[SO (sub 4) ] (sub 2<P6M><P255>4H) (sub 2) O. Indexed XRD powder data are tabulated; strongest lines 3.440(100), 3.505(52), 2.390(49), 3.331(48), 4.778(30), 2.405(30) Aa; a 11.841, b 9.553, c 9.942 Aa, beta 94.87 degrees , V 1120.6 Aa; space group C2/m; Z = 4. The crystal structure was refined to R 0.025; it is isotypic to that of leonite, K (sub 2) Mg[SO (sub 4) ] (sub 2<P6M><P255>4H) (sub 2) O. The name is for Dr K. Mereiter of the Technical University of Vienna.
