Abstract

Brizziite occurs as dense aggregates of platy 001 hexagonal crystals associated with stibiconite and mopungite, in the stibnite deposits in silicified limestone at the Cetine mine. The crystals, which are polysynthetically twinned, are colourless with a pearly lustre; epsilon 1.631, Omega 1.84; D 4.8(2) g/cm (super 3) ; VHN (sub 15) 57. EPMA gave Na (sub 2) O 15.98, Sb (sub 2) O (sub 5) 83.28, corresponding with the formula NaSbO (sub 3) . Indexed powder XRD data are tabulated; strongest lines 1.874(100), 2.365(69), 1.471(69), 2.650(67), 3.00(55), 5.30(53) Aa; a 5.301, c 15.932 Aa; space group R<$E 3 back 40 up 40 ->, Z = 6; the IR spectrum is also given. The crystal structure has been refined to R 0.025; it consists of the ilmenite-type octahedral arrangement with layers of distorted edge-sharing Na octahedra alternating with layers of edge-sharing Sb (super 5+) octahedra along [001]; the layers are interconnected by octahedral face-sharing. The name is for G. Brizzi (1936-1992) who found the original specimens.
