Abstract

Commercial insulation glasses (glass wool, basalt wool, etc.) were hydrothermally altered experimentally using deionized water as the reacting solution at 100-200 degrees C under autogenous P and also at 200 degrees C and 2 kbar, for 2-30 days. Mineral formation is substantially controlled by the solution/sample ratio and the chemical composition of the glasses; products include analcite, smectite, tobermorite, erionite, hydrotalcite, chabazite, sepiolite, stilbite, calcite, cymrite, natrolite, phillipsite, quartz and garronite. Asbestos fibres were not formed under these conditions.
