K-Ar ages, Sr-isotopic compositions and chemistry of Late Cretaceous-Tertiary basalts from the Nubian Desert (northern Sudan)

Abstract

Major and trace element chemistry of basanites and alkali olivine basalts from Kerma and the Bayuda Desert shows characteristics typical of continental intraplate basalts. Chondrite-normalized REE patterns show enrichment in LREE and moderate depletion in HREE. K-Ar whole-rock ages range 34-92 m.y.; initial (super 87) Sr/ (super 86) Sr ratios range 0.7029-0.7035, indicating a depleted upper mantle source; (super 87) Sr/ (super 86) Sr vs 1/Sr suggests that the isotopic variation is due to mantle heterogenity rather than to crustal contamination. There is no correlation between (super 87) Sr/ (super 86) Sr ratios and K-Ar ages or any general trends of chemical compositions. However, the alkali contents of basalts appear to have decreased during the eruption period while the K/Rb ratios increased.
