HRTEM study of the chloritization of micas in the talc-chlorite deposit at Trimouns (Pyrenees, France)

Abstract

In four rock samples from metasomatically altered pegmatite in the Trimouns deposit, two-coexisting types of mica chloritization can be distinguished: dissolution-recrystallization for muscovites and phlogopites and 'solid-state' transformation for other phlogopites. The latter occurs according to the two transformation mechanisms usually described in chloritization phenomena. Microanalyses reveal the presence of K, probably associated with the 'brucite-like' layer, in those chlorites resulting directly from the transformation of micas. Little or none of this K is found in later-formed chlorites constituting the talc-chlorite ore, it is therefore considered as a probable geochemical tracer of older micas.
