The activity of Fe (sub 3) O (sub 4) in Fe (sub 3) O (sub 4) -Fe (sub 2) TiO (sub 4) solid solutions has been experimentally determined at 800 and 900 degrees C at 1 atm P. The activity-composition relations deviate markedly from the 'ideal' (a = X (sub 2) ) behaviour, requiring consideration of Fe (super 2+) -Fe (super 3+) order on the ulvospinel-magnetite join. A solution model has been developed that takes explicit account of order-disorder and activity-composition relations. The derived interaction parameters fit the activity-composition data together with other activity and cation distribution data over the range 800-1300 degrees C.
