Abstract
Previous studies showed that the glide motion of dislocations in quartz is enhanced in the presence of 'water'-related point defects, as long as the P-T conditions prevent the precipitation of these defects. New e.p.r. studies are now reported that provide some evidence that these defects are the hydrogarnet defect (4H) (sub Si) . Models of water speciation and hydrolytic weakening are re-appraised to take into account this observation; such defects may be the rate-controlling process of deformation of quartz in nature.
