Abstract

Dehydration and rehydration experiments were carried out using synthetic single-crystals of tricalcium-aluminate-hexahydrate and dodecacalcium-heptaaluminate; the structure and orientation of the products were investigated by XRD, TG, TGA and DSC. A new Al-rich intermediate hydrogarnet with Al in both six-fold and four-fold coordination was discovered and then prepared by topotactic hydroxylation of the Ca-aluminate: 12CaObullet7Al (sub 2) O (sub 3) bullet15H (sub 2) O, space group Ia3d, a 12.374 Angstrom, Z = 2.
