XANES study of titanium coordination in natural diopsidic pyroxenes

A series of five diopsidic pyroxenes previously reported to have Si and Al deficiency in the tetrahedral sites were used for an X-ray absorption near-edge study, the geometrical features being interpreted on the basis of Ti (super 4+) right arrow Si substitution. The XANES spectral features confirm that Ti (super 4+) preferentially enters the tetrahedral site in two of the diopsides in which Al (super 3+) is absent. In the other three pyroxenes, Ti (super 4+) appears to be distributed among the tetrahedral and octahedral sites. The Fe K-edge spectra of all five pyroxenes show no evidence of tetrahedrally coordinated iron; the prevalent iron oxidation state appears to be Fe (super 2+) .
