Rodingites composed mainly of grossular-andradite and epidote- group minerals occur at one locality in the ophiolitic (?) Hammet Grove meta-igneous suite in the S Appalachian Piedmont, E of Spartanburg. The rodingites occur at or near the contact between altered (steatized) ultramafic rocks and gneissic country rocks; they formed contemporaneously with antigorite in the host rock as the final cooling assemblage following the Palaeozoic metamorphic thermal peak in middle- or upper-amphibolite facies conditions. Petrographic and geochemical evidence suggests that the rodingites were formed by Ca metasomatism of gabbroic and immature greywacke protoliths, and that static conditions prevailed during metasomatism. A study of fluid inclusions in the garnets showed that the serpentinizing fluids contained 5.3 +- 1.0 eq. wt.% NaCl, and that the crystallization T was approx 350-500 degrees C.
