Abstract

The phase transition and compressibility of Mn (sub 3) O (sub 4) have been investigated at room T with XRD experiments at <= 38.7 GPa. At P < 10 GPa a tetragonal phase with the hausmannite structure is present, whereas at higher P this phase transforms to an orthorhombic marokite-like phase with a volume reduction of 8.7%. D (sub calc.) varies between 4.83 and 5.15 g/cm (super 3) for the hausmannite structure from room P to 10 GPa, and between 5.33 and 6.24 g/cm (super 3) for the marokite-like structure in the range 1 bar to 38.7 GPa. Compressibility determination gives a bulk modulus of 137 +- 3.8 GPa for Mn (sub 3) O (sub 4) -hausmannite and 166.6 +- 2.7 GPa for Mn (sub 3) O (sub 4) -marokite. Structural modelling indicates an overall decrease of polyhedral volumes at increasing P, and an increase in the regularity of the sites.
