Experimental and thermodynamic study of Fe-Mg exchange between olivine and orthopyroxene in the system MgO-FeO-SiO (sub 2)

Abstract

Equilibrium compositions of olivine and orthopyroxene were experimentally determined in the olivine-orthopyroxene-quartz and olivine-pyroxene fields in the system MgO-FeO-SiO (sub 2) , using reversed high-P runs in the range 800-1000 degrees C, 5-15 kbar. The compositional data on coexisting olivine and orthopyroxene determined by EPMA and XRD were processed in a non-linear least- squares procedure using the simple mixture model for both solid solutions, resulting in the interaction parameter normalized to the one cation basis W (super ol) (sub G) = 7124 +- 1800 and W (super opx) (sub G) = 3417 +- 2000. Close agreement between calculated and observed compositions of the coexisting phases shows that the simple mixture model is sufficient to describe the thermodynamic behaviour of olivine and orthopyroxene solid solution series.
