Abstract

Pronounced differences in concentration, alignment and grain size distribution of magnetic minerals between loess and palaesol samples in a section at Xifeng are noted. The variable red-brown colour of this sequence is due to a significant hematite component produced by pedogenesis; this is in the form of ultrafine ferromagnetic minerals and gives the palaeosols 4-10 times greater magnetic susceptibility.
