Geothermobarometry based on pyrrhotite composition and fluid inclusion studies; application to the scheelite-bearing deposit of Salau (Pyrenees, France)

Abstract

The equilibrium between S in pyrrhotite and S in a H (sub 2) S- bearing fluid was used to determine the P-T--f (sub O2) -f (sub S2) conditions for the formation of the scheelite ore of Salau. Microthermometry and Raman microspectrometric analyses gave V-X "properties of fluid inclusions and the pyrrhotite composition was determined by XRD to be Fe (sub 0.907) S. The T-f (sub O2) -f (sub S2) values (335 <T" degrees (C) <365; -33 < log <-29; 8.4 <log f (sub S2) <-8.1) are consistent with those determined from the hedenbergite + pyrite + pyrrhotite + quartz + calcite +- andradite paragenesis. This demonstrates that the composition of the pyrrhotite was not significantly modified during cooling and that homogeneous molecular C-O-H equilibria still control the redox state of the fluid at 350 degrees C.
