Abstract

Burpalite, a new mineral of the cuspidine-wohlerite-lavenite family, occurs in a fenitized sandstone in the W contact zone of the Burpalinskii alkaline massif, N Transbaikal, where it is found associated with albite, nepheline, aegirine, alkali amphibole and biotite. Burpalite occurs as colourless platy crystals up to 1 times 3 times 5 mm, with vitreous lustre; H. 5-6, D 3.33 g/cm (super 3) ; optically it has alpha 1.627, beta 1.634, gamma 1.639, 2V (sub alpha) 82 degrees . Indexed XRD powder data are tabulated; strongest lines 2.962(vs), 1.787(s), 1.886(ms), 1.556(ms), 3.306(m), 3.035(m) Angstrom ; a 10.1173, b 10.4446, c 7.2555 Angstrom , beta 90.039 degrees ; Z = 4, space group P2 (sub 1) /a. Electron probe analyses gave SiO (sub 2) 31.82, TiO (sub 2) 1.06, Na (sub 2) O 13.86, CaO 14.52, MnO 0.60, FeO 0.43, ZrO (sub 2) 31.11, Nb (sub 2) O (sub 5) 0.22, Y (sub 2) O (sub 3) 0.32, H (sub 2) O 1.23, F 8.1, less O = F 3.41, = 99.86, leading to the idealized formula Na (sub 2) CaZrSi (sub 2) O (sub 7) (F,OH) (sub 2) ; easily decomposed by cold 10% HCl. Structural refinement to R 0.067 for 1410 reflections shows that burpalite has an order- disorder character; its relationships with 'orthorhombic lavenite' are discussed.
