The kinetics of dehydration and order-disorder of molecular H (super 2) O in Mg-cordierite

Abstract

Data from a thermogravimetric study between 336 and 687 degrees C shows that water loss is controlled by two thermally activated processes, one with activation energy of 39 kJ/mole, the other with E (sub a) 135.5 kJ/mole. The lower process operates in the early stages of the dehydration, while the higher process decreases in importance at high T where most of the channel H (sub 2) O is disordered. The kinetic data are used to define the T dependence of the change in structural state of H (sub 2) O molecules from ordered Type I (with H-H vector parallel the c axis) to disordered.
