Abstract

The same e.p.r. Fe (super 3+ ) centres (I and Sd1) are found in synthetic SnO (sub 2) doped with Fe, Fe + Ti or Fe + Na in HCl solutions and in natural cassiterites (Fe or Fe and Ti rich). This is consistent with the charge compensation mechanism of the I centre (Fe (super 3+) -OH (super -) ); the Fe (super 3+) concentration ratio in the I and Sd1 centres always remains constant. An increase of Nb in the growth medium involves an increase in the number of Sd2 centres and a progressive decrease of Sd1 and I centres: a tenfold decrease in Sd1 and I and a fivefold increase in Sd2 centres was observed in the Fe- and Nb-rich coloured parts of a natural cassiterite in comparison to the Fe- and Nb-poor clearer parts. This is interpreted as the prior creation of Sd2 centres and FeNb (sub 2) O (sub 6) phases at the expense of I and Sd1 centres. The SN centre exists under very different conditions: HNO (sub 3) or HCl + HF solutions containing Fe or Fe + Nb.
