Abstract

This remarkable intrusive body extends > 800 km along strike and yet is only <= 25 km in width. This steeply inclined sill, or dyke, is emplaced along the extreme W margin of the Coast plutonic and metamorphic complex, the high-grade core of the Western Cordillera. It was emplaced syntectonically as a series of steeply inclined sheets by 'dyking' and wedging mechanisms into the middle of an active contractional orogenic belt. Its wedging action and magmatic body force was able to overcome orogenic compressional stresses.
