Abstract

IN the first article of this series (July 1987 TLE), the central topic was traveling waves on a string. These waves propagate along the string, i.e., travel from one end to the other (and back). However, each point on the string vibrates at right angles to the direction of wave motion. This type of wave, in which particle motion is perpendicular to wave motion, is called a transverse wave.
