Abstract

A graphitic quartz-muscovite schist in the Llano uplift of central Texas bears euhedral porphyroblasts of andalusite with unusual yellow-to-colourless pleochroism. They contain by weight, <=0.81% V (sub 2) O (sub 3) and 0.12% Cr (sub 2) O (sub 3) , but <0.07% Fe (sub 2) O (sub 3) , 0.22% TiO (sub 2) and 0.004% Mn (sub 2) O (sub 3) . The distinctive pleochroism results from the strong polarization dependence of the 420-nm absorption band.
