Abstract
A 'state of the art' discussion is presented on the dynamic perspective emerging in the study of metamorphic processes. New studies of heat and fluid flow during metamorphism have an important place in understanding crustal tectonics. Recent advances include the development of methods to make quantitative estimates of amounts of fluid flow, re-evaluation of the contributions of conductive vs advective heat transfer to the energy budget of metamorphic fluids in fluid inclusions and the application of transport theory to the interpretation of fluid/rock ratios.
