Abstract

Deformation mechanisms of glaucophane have been investigated on two naturally deformed samples by optical and TEM microscopy. The two samples had been deformed in eclogite-facies conditions in the Italian Alps; one sample also suffered a later greenschist deformation. Under the optical microscope the glaucophanes display intracrystalline deformation features while TEM observations reveal the operation of glide on several systems at medium and low T. Minor (100) twinning is associated. The presence of subgrains bounded by well-organized dislocation walls indicates that recovery processes are active.
