Rb/Sr geochronology and geochemical characters of the Sithonia plutonic complex (Greece)

Abstract

This complex occupies the middle 'leg' of the three-legged Chalkidiki Peninsula in N Greece and comprises two-mica granites and leucogranites through biotite- and hornblende-bearing granodiorites to granodioritic tonalite. Enclaves of quartz diorite composition are common, and aplitic and pegmatitic dykes occur. The geochemistry of these rocks suggest fractional crystallization with some crustal contamination; the Sr isotopic data indicate contamination with material rich in radiogenic Sr, increasing the initial (super 87) Sr/ (super 86) Sr ratio from 0.7055 to 0.7072 during differentiation. A Rb-Sr whole rock isochron yields an intrusion age of 50.4 +- 0.7 m.y. and an initial (super 87) Sr/ (super 86) Sr ratio of 0.7072. Muscovite ages range 54.6 +- 1.8 to 44.6 +- 1.4 m.y. and biotites give 47.7 +- 1.4 to 28.8 +- 0.9 m.y. The younger (leucogranite) ages are thought to be related to late-stage deformation.
