New spinelloid phases in the MgGa (sub 2) O (sub 4) -Mg (sub 2) GeO (sub 4) and MgFe (sub 2) O (sub 4) -Mg (sub 2) GeO (sub 4) systems

The spinelloid phase Mg (sub 3) Ga (sub 2) GeO(III), stable at 1 atm in the MgGa (sub 2) O (sub 4) -Mg (sub 2) GeO (sub 4) system, has been found to transform in high P-T conditions into other members of the spinelloid family. These results extend the structural analogy existing between the MgGa (sub 2) O (sub 4) -Mg (sub 2) GeO (sub 4) and NiAl (sub 2) O (sub 4) -Ni (sub 2) SiO (sub 4) systems, the former being a lower P analogue of the latter. A new room-P spinelloid phase, Mg (sub 3) Fe (sub 2) GeO (sub 8) (III), has also been synthesized and characterized by XRD.
