Abstract

The crystal chemistry of a natural, birefringent (approx 0.001) garnet of composition (Fe (sub 1.88) Ca (sub 0.75) Mg (sub 0.24) Mn (sub 0.10) ) (sub 2.97) (Al (sub 1.96) Fe (sub 0.03) Ti (sub 0.01) ) (sub 2.00) Si (sub 3.01) O (sub 12) (approx pyralspite (sub 75) - grandite (sub 25) ), produced by subduction-zone metamorphism, has been investigated by single-crystal XRD, EPMA, Mossbauer spectroscopy and Fourier-transform IR spectroscopy. It has a 11.6207, c 11.6230 Angstrom ; space group I4/acd.
