Abstract

Pitiglianoite, ideally Na (sub 6) K (sub 2) Si (sub 6) Al (sub 6) O (sub 24) (SO (sub 4) ).2H (sub 2) O, is a new alumino-silicate that occurs in ejected blocks near Pitigliano, S Tuscany, Italy. It is hexagonal, space group P6 (sub 3) , with a 22.121(3), c 5.221(1) Angstrom, and Z = 3. Pitiglianoite is colourless with a vitreous lustre; D 2.37(4), D (sub calc.) 2.394 g/cm (super 3) . Optically it is uniaxial negative with omega 1.508(1) and epilson 1.506(1). The strongest powder XRD lines are 4.77, 3.27, 6.39, 3.69, 2.769, 2.650 Angstrom . Its crystal structure has been refined to R = 0.065 using 2799 reflections obtained with MoK radiation on a four- circle automatic diffractometer.
