Pressure-induced cation exchange in bentonite/laponite mixtures

Exchangeable cation associations in physical mixtures of bentonite and laponite have been examined by XRD, EPMA and multivariate statistical methods. The results suggest that cation exchange can occur in air-dry mixtures when P (approx 64 kbar) is applied. No attempt is made to describe the reaction mechanism but it appears to require the presence of adsorbed water.
